Transformations of Sacred Space.

The Christian church has been an inherent part of human continuity for more than thousand years. The external appearance of the Christian church has always reflected societal transformations as well as turning points in history. Moreover, it has become an integral part of our existence both in space and time. Nowadays, we frequently hear that the crisis of European society is in effect an identity crisis, an inability to ask about where we are heading and what the meaning of life is. The reduction of time givenness to the already limited scope of our own physical existence destroys the ability in a man to ask questions and find answers to them, or even enquire about the meaning and essence of things. The carefree, dispersed husk blown by the wind may seem to be free and independent; however, it has also stopped trying to actively find paths for future generations. One of the fundamental attributes of an architect should be a strong aptitude for synthetic thinking, which includes multiple knowledge of social cognition, i.e. in the currentness of present experience as well as in time. This knowledge should ideally help to identify the core of problem, and to define the general rules applicable, regardless of changes in social demand, trends or taste. This dissertation, concerned with the “change” of the Christian church, ought to provide a compact, effective platform based on a synthesis of all analytical findings in the areas of architecture, liturgy, history, and theology. This platform can be applied in architectural practice, education (both architectural and theological), pastorage, and other wide, well-researched social discourses on the current form of the Christian sacred space, its basis and likely future development. The emphasis should be put on individual interpretation of a target group rather than dogmatic interpretation of dramatic revelations. Therefore, the first half of the dissertation will analyse the theological and symbolic basis, and historic transformations. Whilst, the second half will depict the current approach to the creation of sacred space in both newly built churches and the ongoing conversions of existing spaces. In conclusion, the dissertation will debate the future direction of sacred space in post-Christian Europe.

Liturgical space of the church in the selected parish

The bachelor thesis deals with the liturgical space of the church of St. Jacob the Elder in Boršov nad Vltavou. At the beginning, the thesis briefly defines the concept of liturgy and describes its development in the historical context. Then, it generally introduces the meaning and the historical development of the liturgical space, especially the influence of the II. Vatican Council to its apperance. The thesis also describes the Roman Catholic parish of Boršov nad Vltavou as a territorial community with surrounding villages where the sacral buildings are used for liturgical activities. Based on the facts from the first part, the main goal of the thesis is to describe the development and current form of the liturgical space of the church of St. Jacob the Elder. Finally, it presents leisure activities in the parish, in which the community of parishioners participates.

Bedřich Vašek and the "Christian Sociology" in the Context of the Development of the Church's Social Teaching in the First Half of the 20th Century. Implications for the 21st Century

The dissertation seeks an answer to the question of the content of the somewhat paradoxical phrase "Christian sociology", specifically the content of Christian sociology as conceived by the Moravian scholar of the first half of the 20th century Bedřich Vašek (1882-1959). At the same time, however, as a result of the insights brought by the research itself, the original thesis was supplemented by the question of the current state of this specific rejuvenating field. The idea of Christian sociology remained virtually dormant from the 1950s until the later 1970s. The revival of the field can be seen as an apparent response to both the methodological changes of the Second Vatican Council and the advent of postmodern society. The research has provided a wealth of stimuli for exploring the relationship between the historical phenomenon of Christian sociology and contemporary notions of the Christian or Catholic perspective in sociology and, more broadly, the relationship between the social doctrine of the Church, theology and sociology in international and domestic settings. Art and music in the liturgy according to Joseph Ratzinger

The thesis represents the view of Joseph Ratzinger on the importance, function and place of music in the liturgy in accordance with the conclusions of 2nd Vatican Council - in relations of music and liturgy, with consideration of primary and secondary functions of sacred music. The primary function of liturgical music by J. Ratzinger consists in the support of the Word, secondary function means issue between the church and culture. Ratzinger also offers solutions of other problems - inculturation in liturgical music while maintaining a Christian identity and the development of Christian universalism, conditions provided by church for liturgical composers. The presented texts shoe Ratzinger's priorities for liturgical music, especially musical forms and style. These are the properties which can be viewed from many angles and can have a lot of different results.

Jesus' teachings on marriage as a return to the "origin". This bachelor thesis deals with the meaning, importance and necessity of a marriage as an institution not only in the ancient history but also in the present times. Today's modern society is influenced by its widely- tolerated attributes, those are as followed - the deflection from a marriage as an institution, a cohabitation of the unmarried couples, a depreciation of the concept of marriage, the full perception of the importance of body, the society's attitude towards the contraception and miscarriage itself, the periodic incontinence and last but not at least the loss of a gift of reciprocity. But there are many people who understand marriage as a prime holiness, responsible parenthood and honor its high ethical and moral values. They also honor the love which relates to the purity expressed as a continence that protects the dignity. As well as they give evidence of a positive change, a deepened intimacy, love and a rediscovery of sexual self-control. Karel Sklenička 's Responsorial Psalms

The diploma thesis consists of three parts. The first one describes the historical role of psalms during masses from their origin until presence. It illuminates the new role of psalms in the Cathlolic liturgy after the second Vatican council and outlines how these liturgical changes projected into Czech Catholic enviroments. The second part introduces significant Czech psalters and their authors. The psalters were created for liturgical needs and in reaction to the conclusions of the 2VC for liturgical needs. The third, main part of the thesis consists of detailed analysis of 1992 Karel Sklenička's psalter Responsoriální žalmy pro neděle a významné dny liturgického roku. The analysis of harmonic and melodic procedures of individual tones serves as a basis for the practival part of the thesis which is an extension of existing Sklenička's psalter to all days of liturgical year. The new psalter preserves the music component composed by Karel Sklenička and also preserves the way of work with the liturgical text in new psalms following the pattern of Karel Sklenička. The new psalter keeps strictly to the liturgically prescribed texts for individual liturgical occasions like the psalter from 1992.

The sacrament of marriage in contemporary theology

The thesis, on the background of biblical and historical origins, gathers some of the present theological views, formed in particular by the papal documents that commend on marriage. It emphasizes the essential elements of this sacrament, with regards to their comprehensibility to the present recipients. It also deals with the problematic situations arising after the disintegration of the sacramental bond, and mentions possible approaches to addressing the issue of birth control. It also reflects some of the critical views and compares them with the Church's current teaching, in order to indicate the desirable plurality of views containing the potential for future solutions to the conflicts that have arisen. Specific attention is paid to the integration of Catholic Christians living in illegitimate relationships into full communion with the Church and the resulting tasks of particular Catholic communities.
